The Eco-Certification criteria were established by the Malta Tourism Authority following extensive research. This scheme encourages hotels to deliver a better product to meet the demand of the ever-increasing environmentally conscious tourists.
Hotels must comply with a number of criteria all aimed at improving the hotels' environmental performance and increasing environmental awareness amongst staff. The criteria include environmental management, waste management, procurement, energy, water, air quality, noise, building and green areas, local culture and information dissemination.

The Victoria Hotel has an Eco Committee, also known as the GREEN WARDENS, whose aim is to continuously discuss issues relating to the environment and seek ways to help protect the environment during our normal pace at work. Through our Sustainability program we ensure a great value to our guests and staff by focusing on improving environmental, social and economic benefits. The program targets reducing waste, water and energy usage without sacrificing the guests’ comfort.
Some of our Environmentally beneficial practices include:
Monitoring of specific environmental goals by management.
Training given to employees on environmental good practices.
Continually monitoring negative environmental impacts.
This is done through:
• Separation of organic waste, oil and batteries.
• Reducing the use of harmful cleaning products and detergents, such as corrosive and non biodegradable products.
• Using biodegradable products.
• Storing toxic and dangerous products as well as cleaning products correctly.
• Monitoring of chlorine in swimming pool daily.
• Purchasing white goods with clean technology.
• Regularly controlling the filling and leakage in the air-conditioned system and cold rooms.
• Replacing CFC and similar products by more ecological ones.
• Using a preventative maintenance program for water installation.
• Using rain water collecting systems.
• Discharging waste water without altering the environment.
• Using water saving devices in showers, for taps in rooms and in room water cisterns.
• Using pesticides and herbicides with low impact on the environment.
• Using an irrigating system which saves water in external gardens.

• Informing guests about local cultural events.
